How to Activate Burst Mode on an iPhone

Capturing life’s perfect moments, especially if your subject is moving, can be very tricky. For you to get that perfect photograph, you will need a camera that can shoot multiple pictures per second while providing quality shots. Fortunately for you, you won’t need to bring your bulky digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera with you wherever you go because your iPhone can now do all these things for you, and to add another good news, activating the Burst Mode while taking pictures with your iPhone camera is very easy to do!


Part 1 of 3: Setting Up Your iPhone Camera


1. Look for the Camera Application on Your iPhone. The camera application icon shows a black picture of a camera on a gray background with the word “camera” underneath. There are two ways to find this icon:
  • One way is to look for it on your home screen by swiping left or right on the screen.
  • The second, and faster way, is to slide your finger from the bottom of the screen upwards. When a gray panel appears, you will find the camera icon on the bottom right part of the panel.


2. Launch the camera application. To launch the Camera application, just tap the camera icon once and the application will be opened.


3. Choose the photo option. Before trying to take any picture, make sure that the camera mode is on “Photo,” otherwise, you might take a video shot instead.
  • To make sure that you are on the right mode, look for the shutter button on the bottom part of the screen. The shutter button is the big white circle on the middle part of the bottom of your iPhone screen.
  • Above that shutter button, you will find the words “Video,” “Photo,” “Square,” and “Pano.” These words are in white except for one, which will be in yellow. The highlighted yellow word is the camera mode that you are in. If the mode “Photo” is not in yellow, swipe your finger from side to side until you have highlighted the Photo mode.

Part 2 of 3: Activating and Taking Burst Mode Shots


1. Take aim at the subject of your shots. After selecting the Photo mode, you can now select the subject, or subjects, that you are going to take pictures of. With your iPhone, there are two ways to capture pictures: with the front camera and the back camera.
  • The back camera is the commonly preferred camera because it has a higher resolution (8 megapixels) than the front camera (VGA resolution). The back camera can be found in the upper left corner of the back of the iPhone. To take pictures, just point the back camera towards the direction of your subject until you see your subject in your iPhone camera screen.
  • The front camera, although lower in resolution, is still preferred when taking selfies, or shots with you as the subject, since you will see yourself in real-time before you take your pictures. The front camera is located in the upper part of the iPhone in the form of a small round camera lens. This is where you must direct your eyes, not on the screen, when you are taking your pictures so that your eyes and face will not be facing somewhere else in your shots.


2. Take Burst Mode pictures using the shutter button. Now that you are ready to take Burst Mode photos, all you need to do is to press the shutter button. Pressing the shutter button once will take a single photo of your subject. Holding down the shutter button will make your iPhone take multiple pictures using the Burst Mode.
  • For older models of iPhones, such as the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s, you can take 2–3 pictures per second only, but for newer models like the iPhone 5, you can take up to 10 shots per second.
  • If your iPhone audio setting is in General mode, you will actually hear the shutter sounds just like what you’ll hear from a DSLR camera.


3. Take Burst Mode pictures using the volume button. If you are finding it difficult, or frustrating, to take pictures using the shutter button on the iPhone screen, not a problem! Use the volume buttons instead.
  • The volume buttons are the two protruding buttons on the left side of your iPhone with the positive (+) and negative (-) signs.
  • To take your Burst Mode photos, just choose your subject and aim your camera lens towards it. Then press and hold either of the two volume buttons and the Burst Mode will be activated.
  • Again, if your audio setup is in General mode, you will still hear the rapid shooting sounds while taking your multiple pictures.

Part 3 of 3: Managing Your Burst Mode Photos


1. Open the Photo application. If you are using the newer models of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 5, there is an easy way to manage pictures that you have taken using the Burst Mode. First, you will need to go to the Photo application so that you can choose and discard the pictures that you have taken.
  • If you’re still inside the Camera application, you will see a thumbnail of the last picture that you have taken on the lower left corner of the screen. Tap on that thumbnail once and you will be directed to the Photo application.
  • If you have already closed the Camera application, just look for the Photo application on your iPhone screen. The Photo application’s icon is a multi-colored flower and has the word “Photos” underneath it. Tap on the Photo icon and you will launch the application.


2. Browse through the Burst Mode photos. Inside the Photo application, you will see that the photos you took using Burst Mode appear as stacks. Tap on the option “Select” at the bottom and you can now browse through the pictures.


3. Select photos to keep or discard. Tap the blue check marks on the photos you’d like to keep and tap on “Done” in the upper right hand corner of the screen when you’re finished. Those pictures with no check marks will be discarded after you tap on “Done.”
  • For older iPhone models, however, you will have to find the Photos application, launch it by tapping on it, and then manually select and delete the pictures that you’d like to discard.

How to Build a Supercomputer

Are you in need of a machine that can deliver hundreds of trillions of floating-point calculations per second? Or are you in need of a bar story about how the supercomputer in your basement flipped a breaker? Building your own High Performance Compute cluster, a.k.a. supercomputer, is a challenge any expert geek with a weekend of free time and some cash to burn can tackle. Technically speaking, a modern, multi-processor supercomputer is a network of computers working together in parallel to solve a problem. This article will briefly describe each step in the process, focusing on hardware and software.




Steps


1. First determine the hardware components and resources needed. You will need one head node, at least a dozen identical compute nodes, an Ethernet switch, a power distribution unit, and a rack. Determine the electrical demand, cooling and space required. Also decide on what IP address you want for your private networks, what to name the nodes, what software packages you want installed, and what technology you want to provide the parallel computing capabilities (more on this later).
  • Though the hardware is expensive, all software listed in this how-to is free, and most are open source.

2. Build the compute nodes. You will need to assemble the compute nodes or acquire pre-build servers.
  • Choose a computer server chassis that maximizes space, cooling, and energy efficiency.
  • Or you can utilize a dozen or so used, outdated servers - whose whole will outweigh the sum of their parts yet save you a sizable lump of cash. All processors, network adapters, and motherboards should be identical for the whole system to play together nicely. Of course, don't forget about RAM and storage for each node and at least one optical drive for the head node.



3. Install the servers into the rack. Start from the bottom, so the rack isn't top heavy. You will need a friend to help you with this - the dense servers can be very heavy and guiding them into the rails that hold them into the rack is difficult.

4. Install the Ethernet switch above the server chassis. Take this moment to configure the switch: allow for jumbo frame sizes of 9000 bytes, set the IP address to the static address you decided on in step 1, and turn off unnecessary routing protocols such as SMTP Snooping.

5. Install the PDU (Power Distribution Unit). Depending on how much current your nodes may need at maximum load, you may need 220 volts for high performance computing.

6. With everything installed, you can begin the configuration process. Linux is the de facto OS for HPC clusters–not only is it the ideal environment for scientific computing, but it doesn't cost a thing to install it on hundreds or even thousands of nodes. Imagine how much it would cost to install Windows on all those nodes?
  • Begin with installing the latest version of the motherboard BIOS and firmware, which should be the same on all nodes.
  • Install your preferred linux distro on each node, with a graphical UI for the head node. Popular choices include CentOS, OpenSuse, Scientific Linux, RedHat, and SLES.
  • This author highly recommends using the Rocks Cluster Distribution. In addition to installing all the tools necessary for a compute cluster to function, Rocks uses a great method for 'distributing' many instances of itself to the nodes very quickly using PXE boot and the Red Hat 'Kick Start' procedure.
7. Install the message-passing interface, resource-manager, and other necessary libraries. If you didn't install Rocks in the previous step, you will have to manually setup the necessary software to enable the parallel computing mechanisms.
  • First you will need a portable bash management system, such as the Torque Resource Manager, which allows you to break-up and distribute tasks to multiple machines.
  • Pair Torque with the Maui Cluster Scheduler to complete the setup.
  • Next you will need to install the message passing interface, necessary for the individual processes on the separate compute nodes to share the same data. OpenMP is a no-brainer.
  • Don't forget the multi-threading math libraries and compilers to build your parallel computing programs. Did I mention that you should just install Rocks?


8. Network the compute nodes together. The head node sends the compute tasks to the compute nodes, which in turn must send the result back, as well as sending messages to each other. The faster the better.
  • Use a private ethernet network to connect all the nodes in the cluster.
  • The head node can also act as a NFS, PXE, DHCP, TFTP, and NTP server over the Ethernet network.
  • You must separate this network from public networks, which ensures that broadcast packets don't interfere with other networks in your LAN.

9. Test the cluster. The last thing you may want to do before releasing all this compute power to your users is test it's performance. The HPL (High Performance Lynpack) benchmark is a popular choice for measuring the computational speed of the cluster. You will need to compile it from source with all possible optimizations your compiler offers for the architecture you chose.
  • You must, of course, compile from source with all possible optimization options for your platform. For example, if using AMD CPUs, compile with Open64 with -0fast optimization level.
  • Compare your results on TOP500.org to compare your cluster to the fastest 500 supercomputers in the world!

Tips

  • IPMI can make administration of a large cluster a breeze by providing KVM-over-IP, remote power cycling, and more.
  • For really high network speeds, look into the InfiniBand network interfaces. Be prepared to pay premium prices though.
  • Use Ganglia to monitor the computational loads on the nodes.

How to Delete Files Directly Without Sending Them to Recycle Bin

If you're a power user of Windows or just work with many files, you'll realize that moving files to the Recycle Bin in order to delete them is a pain. Why can't you just delete them on the spot? It's actually fairly simple and easy to do so. Just follow these instructions and you'll be deleting files in Windows like a pro!

Steps


1. Pick your method. There are two methods to directly deleting files in Windows.
  • Method 1 will show you how to delete files by right clicking on them and selecting Delete, which normally sends files to the Recycle Bin.
  • Method 2 allows you to send files to the Recycle Bin, but also allows you to permanently delete them when necessary.


Method 1 of 2: Changing the Right-Click Deletion Option


1. Right click the Recycle Bin and select "Properties".


2. In the Recycle Bin Properties box, choose the "Do not move the files to the Recycle Bin" option.


3. Click the "OK" button.


4. After you have completed this, the actions that will usually send files to the Recycle Bin will permanently delete them.
  • You can reverse this by choosing the option "Custom Size" in Recycle Bin Properties. (Untick the option "Do not move the files to the Recycle Bin" in Windows XP.



Method 2 of 2: Deleting Just One File at a Time


1. Right click the file that you want to delete permanently.


2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.


3. While holding the Shift' key, click Delete or alternatively press the delete button on you keyboard while holding Shift.


4. Confirm the file deletion and the file will be deleted permanently.

3. Experiment with what you know and thus learn what you don't know.



4. Study programming languages such as HTML, JavaScript, PHP, SQL,Visual basic and Java. Every computer genius knows at least one or two programming languages. And at the very least, you should know HTML.



5. Take computer classes at your high school, community college, or university.



6. Explore everything with your computer and make an effort to learn something new every time that you get behind the computer.
